picking locks is only for the pros

[singlepic=848,300,300,right]i’ve been reading and hearing a lot about apple’s latest downloadable update for their “revolutionary”–or as it seems more appropriately labeled “controversial”–iphone, and how it supposedly breaks the functionality of phones unlocked for use on other cellular carriers, to the point they cease to function at all. and to be honest, it irritates me that anyone would be so overly sensitive about something so heavily steeped in common sense.

first of all, while it may not be illegal to unlock a cell phone, it is being sold, supported, and directed for use under very specific conditions. but to undo those specific guidelines and limitations of both the hardware and software in an unauthorised, unsupported way is–let’s face it–hacking. for anyone technically savvy enough to know how to hack an iphone–AND UNDERSTAND–what they’re doing in the process, it shouldn’t be a big deal, as they should also be able to work with or around the new updates; that’s what hackers do. but for those who are simply following a tutorial found on Google or by using some unofficial software to perform the dirty deeds, they ought to know better, or at least have thought ahead and made sure their actions were undoable or warrantied by the author of whatever software used to hack before even considering something so risky.

second, it’s not a cheap device, even after the recent 30% price slash. why anyone would pay for such a sophisticated cell phone, only to tinker with it in hopes of breaking its intended functionality so they can do something else is beyond me. yes, i fully understand the plights of non-at&t wireless customers and international users wanting to share in the rotational, multi-touch glow, but unfortunately those are the tough breaks. the iphone is contractually bound between the hardware manufacturer and the service provider; to undo that bond is only asking for trouble on any number of fronts. if you had to save up to purchase the phone, you shouldn’t have taken such a hefty risk with it. if you have the free-flowing cash on hand that the risk and potential loss wasn’t an issue, just go get another one.

therein lies the problem. for such a hot gadget as an iphone, so many people were willing to just jump right on the bandwagon and ignore the fine print of their user licenses, agreements, and warranties that now they have nobody to blame but themselves. yet blaming apple for their own gambling disorders is exactly what’s happening. some may liken unlocking a phone to painting a car, changing the oil, or installing a hula-dancing bobble on the rear sill; but looking at the nature of those changes, it’s mostly cosmetic. even changing the oil is usually something covered in a car’s manual.. they even give you special nozzles, hoses, and knobs to do it. but an iphone has no such instructions, has no hoses or knobs; hell, it doesn’t really even have any seams to invite tinkering hobbyists to monkey with its innards. unlocking an iphone is fundamentally changing the way the device is intended to work; it’s not cosmetic at all. some people will take those signs at face value and use the phone as it should be, when others will take them as personal challenges to overcome. after all, rules are meant to be broken, right?

bottom line is, if you’re a seasoned hacker, go for it. if you have money to burn, go for it. if you don’t fall into either of those categories; it’s probably best to just follow the rules like a good little consumer, and wait for another opportunity down the road… or just don’t bother with software updates. 😛

Squeakers

[singlepic=782,250,250,right]thought of the day: why are basketball shoes called “sneakers”, when in fact they are useless for sneaking of any kind? watching even 3 minutes of a game will deafen any spectator with countless shrill bursts of sound as the players dart back and forth, the rubber soles refusing the punishment with screams of defiance. i propose these shoes be renamed as “squeakers” to more accurately describe their performance.

in other news, i managed a quick sketch today. could be part of my ‘twisted nintendo’ series, but i already have a koopa troopa, and this one isn’t as cool or as finished.

also, tying up as many loose ends as possible before my week-long visit to my favourite city, seattle! i will update things as best i can while on the road.

(A) Live!

Live - Throwing Copper
This “Live” has nothing to do with my site, except i am a fan.

It only took 6 months of painful development, planning, testing, etc; I’m only 3 months overdue, but it’s done, and both my new site and I are still alive!

First a note on the name. This site is shared between two domains, cor and cortjezter.com. Obviously one is my legal name, the other is my online personality and ‘brand’ so to speak. Since millions of people have come to know this brand name, it’s only fair to play into it a bit 🙂

The main hurdle was wrestling WordPress, in all of its MySQL database-driven, php templated glory. HTML and CSS I know, but these new web technologies are anything but designer friendly. I’ll spare everyone the boring geek-speak and just say I’m glad it’s over…for now.

So what’s new? Obviously, instead of a static, HTML-based site, it’s fully running WordPress, except with a custom theme, customised database-driven gallery, and lots of other little features sprinkled throughout, such as a comment system for any of my posts. TONS of new content has been added (and some older stuff removed) to the gallery, and organised in a more visual way.

*Note that you can continue clicking an image to enlarge it–so there’s a thumbnail, then a larger view, then a presentation frame, then the raw graphic file. Many of the images are quite large; mainly because a lot of effort goes into the details of an image, and small web graphics aren’t the best at sharing that.

So what is yet to come? I love black and red as a colour combination, which is why the first and default theme is what it is. In the future, I plan to have several themes and colour schemes to choose from, in case you’re in a sunnier mood than blood red and ’emo’ black. I have also not populated the “personal” section yet, mainly because I’ve focused on delivering the content people are most interested in, which generally doesn’t include me personally 😛 Of course additional art will be added to the gallery as time goes on; some things are business-confidential for a couple more weeks. Also, I’m sure a few bugs will be identified and need squashing, so if you happen across something, send me an email or leave a comment!

That’s all for now… working on a few reviews of things I’ve bought lately, including one of the new flagship Pioneer Elite receivers, my PS3, and a few games. Of course they’ll be posted as soon as they’re done, so stay tuned. Be sure to leave a comment with any feedback or stalker love!

What the PS3 made me do

so i recently bought a ps3, and while my review isn’t live yet for that, an absolutely unbeatable opportunity presented itself to upgrade my 53″ rear projection panasonic hdtv to a slick new panasonic 50″ 1080p plasma (th-50pz750), which takes full advantage of the highest-available picture quality. needless to say, i definitely did my research on the thing before deciding to take the plunge and order my own, and the general consensus is that the 10th generation of plasma technology from panasonic is top-notch; some reviewers even going so far as to say it unseats pioneer elite as the king of plasma television.

while i’m having trouble getting my xbox360 to properly display in 1080p–which according to microsoft’s xbox website it should be able to do with their HD a/v component cables after last fall’s system update–being able to run 720p or a pseudo 1080p (1080i which the tv de-interlaces) is still truly beautiful. and it should go without saying that the ps3 running native 1080p over HDMI is even better, both game footage as well as blu-ray movie playback. this tv’s black levels are something to behold; i’ve never seen a tv of any sort with such deep black levels that it often looks as though parts of the screen are in fact revealing the abyss of deep space. the glossy, ipod-y black bezel of the tv looks great during day or night, and the black levels can often achieve the same deepness. the brights come close to simulating daylight in my rather large room when daylight is missing outside.

bottom line: the panasonic th-50pz750 is incredible, and quite a value compared to any of the next best screens available in the pioneer elite line. a slightly more consumer-focused model (th-50pz700) is available which omits a few higher-end, advanced picture controls and an HDMI port for 500$ less, but share the same screen. as well, 42″ and 58″ models are also available depending on your size and budgetary considerations. a definite must-buy if you’re in the market for a plasma tv.

since it’s been nearly impossible to find decent photos of this tv, i decided to take some of my own, along with a few video clips. below you’ll find a couple photos of my previous panasonic, and then a bunch of my new baby, including a few with me standing next to it for scale and size relationship (i’m 6′ tall). and yes, it’s summertime, so with a little warm weather or sun, i become a full-on silhouette, as you can see from the photos.. the walls are properly lit, and i’m still dark 😛
