Not So Far: Quest for z-dub’s treasure

zack & wiki: quest for a bleeding copy!
we’re all supposed to buy it but it’s not for sale!

so the past several months, i have supported the rest of us staffers at gonintendo by supporting matt casamassina and the ign nintendo team’s “buy zack & wiki campaign“, going so far as to create custom graphics based on the game assets to promote it on our site. but now that the release date has come and gone, it seems my part of the country was left off the shipping manifest, since nobody around town got them in stock. don’t misread that…the game isn’t sold out, it was never in stock to begin with. i could understand a store here or there being behind on receiving, but the whole metro area? that’s clearly indication of a larger problem.

i won’t go so far as to theorise a conspiracy to counteract the grass roots promotion, but it IS strange how friends around the country have been enjoying the game for days, while my pirate ship is beached far from any shore here in the midwest. hard to actually follow through on what i’ve been helping preach to everyone else and buy a copy if nobody will take my money for one.

on a completely different note, here’s a little poem i scribbled out a couple months ago. i normally don’t provide insight into my writings and instead lean toward readers filling in the blanks for themselves, but this is a piece about the guilt of temptation and the redemption in resisting. enjoy:

What the PS3 made me do

so i recently bought a ps3, and while my review isn’t live yet for that, an absolutely unbeatable opportunity presented itself to upgrade my 53″ rear projection panasonic hdtv to a slick new panasonic 50″ 1080p plasma (th-50pz750), which takes full advantage of the highest-available picture quality. needless to say, i definitely did my research on the thing before deciding to take the plunge and order my own, and the general consensus is that the 10th generation of plasma technology from panasonic is top-notch; some reviewers even going so far as to say it unseats pioneer elite as the king of plasma television.

while i’m having trouble getting my xbox360 to properly display in 1080p–which according to microsoft’s xbox website it should be able to do with their HD a/v component cables after last fall’s system update–being able to run 720p or a pseudo 1080p (1080i which the tv de-interlaces) is still truly beautiful. and it should go without saying that the ps3 running native 1080p over HDMI is even better, both game footage as well as blu-ray movie playback. this tv’s black levels are something to behold; i’ve never seen a tv of any sort with such deep black levels that it often looks as though parts of the screen are in fact revealing the abyss of deep space. the glossy, ipod-y black bezel of the tv looks great during day or night, and the black levels can often achieve the same deepness. the brights come close to simulating daylight in my rather large room when daylight is missing outside.

bottom line: the panasonic th-50pz750 is incredible, and quite a value compared to any of the next best screens available in the pioneer elite line. a slightly more consumer-focused model (th-50pz700) is available which omits a few higher-end, advanced picture controls and an HDMI port for 500$ less, but share the same screen. as well, 42″ and 58″ models are also available depending on your size and budgetary considerations. a definite must-buy if you’re in the market for a plasma tv.

since it’s been nearly impossible to find decent photos of this tv, i decided to take some of my own, along with a few video clips. below you’ll find a couple photos of my previous panasonic, and then a bunch of my new baby, including a few with me standing next to it for scale and size relationship (i’m 6′ tall). and yes, it’s summertime, so with a little warm weather or sun, i become a full-on silhouette, as you can see from the photos.. the walls are properly lit, and i’m still dark 😛

old school gaming video mashup

don’t think for a minute you could beat this old school game; its developers have infused characters and environments from so many sources, that you’ll never know what’s up next, and even if your jedi mind powers can predict some things, knowing what exactly each character will do is almost beyond random. a truly hilarious and well-made mashup of nostalgic gaming goodness. enjoy!

windy city didn’t blow

video games live logoi spent the weekend of august 4 in chicago, along with the rest of my friends/staff at gonintendo, specifically to attend the video games live concert, an interactive orchestral event devoted to the appreciation of video game music. while we were invited by one of the event founders, it seems the invitation was mostly to lend assistance to the production than to enjoy the show itself. luckily part of it for us included backstage access, vip badges, and also a night of hanging out with some other vgl staffers and game composers.

the premise of video games live is to give the audience an interactive concert, or at least one with more entertainment value than your average symphony. the show includes a large video display which runs footage of the game whose music is being played.. and the staging includes a variety of fancy, whirling lights that dance off the translucent haze no doubt generated by the panting mouths of the enraptured audience below. but the catch is that the orchestra plays in sychrony with the video footage, and the lights reflect both the rhythm and colour-mood of the display. all the elements play together and upon one another in brilliant moments sprinkled throughout the performance.

the show itself ran about two hours, and included music & video ranging from bleeping space invaders to footage of nintendo’s vaunted and as-yet-unreleased legend of zelda: twilight princess. while some of the programmed lighting forced the spotlights framing the giant screen to drown the picture behind, it wasn’t as distracting as you’d think not being able to see the video would be. as for the interactive bits, a few lucky audience members got to take place in on-stage contests of skill in effort to win various prizes. unfortunately, not everyone won, but i’m sure the thrill of being on stage was as valuable a takeaway as any prize package.

cortjezter having computer issues at the hoteli’ve heard mixed reviews over the performance of other local orchestras peforming the VGL repertoire, but chicago’s was top notch all the way; not an off-note the whole night. in fact, some of the pieces were so well done, it rivalled the production values of the original studio-recorded tracks. not to geek out too much, but with jack wall conducting the theme/medley of myst (some of which he also composed), i was delighted to tears; the orchestra and chorale were really that good. if you have a chance to check out a VGL show in your area, i highly recommend it.

nintendo and hidden homosexuality?

not really brothers?
not really brothers?

here’s a question posed by a member of the boards over at gonintendo, the gaming site i help run: has nintendo closeted any of it’s major (or minor) franchise characters; are any nintendo characters gay?

you know, this is an interesting question, even if it does stray quite far from the characters and their appeal. nintendo characters are popular because they appeal to so many demographics, and appeal to those demographics because they’re popular. one of the strengths of their franchises is that they’re free from the things that normally alienate people… such as adult situations and sexuality. even innuendo is rare, if ever found in direct connection with them.

that said, to take them out of context and replaced into an adult context… we can all read whatever we want into it. gay characters are of course as much speculation as is assuming they’re straight. do the male protagonists battle to free the damsel out of heroic duty, romantic interest, or a mixture of both? 2 of the 3 options imply heterosexuality, so the odds are in that favour, but this thread is to explore that other 1/3 chance that they’re not.

Super Mario Galaxy, Wii details predicted in ’91 by modern day Nostradamus

Nintendo Power, December 1991; 'Player's Pulse' excerptafter reading this joystiq article yesterday, i decided to unearth my old issues of Nintendo Power to see for myself whether this was true, or a photoshop phabrication. as it turns out, jimmy peterford DID predict the near-future state of nintendo back in december of 1991.

among the almost creepy parallels are the name of nintendo’s next mario flagship platformer, super mario galaxy; and also information about their “virtual console” feature of their next console, Wii. One thing this article doesn’t mention is the inclusion of “six” controllers…though it draws lines between the predicted number of “buttons” the wii-mote could be said to have. as it turns out, the wii’s wireless controller uses the bluetooth standard, which limits device-to-device connectivity to 7 per base unit… so little jimmy was close on that count as well.

it’s my bet that today he either works at nintendo, or for miss cleo and her bevy of 900 numbers.

eat what you are?

thought of the day: you are what you eat? well if someone eats something good, and then you eat them, what are you? good by transitive properties (if a = b and b = c, then a = c), or bad by societal standards?

this was pretty clever…. anyone who remembers space invaders (and i can’t think of anyone–even your average senior citizen–who doesn’t or shouldn’t) can enjoy the combination of simple pixel animation and stop-motion animation. add in the human factor, a sloping movie theatre with plenty of chairs, and you have yourself a buster of an entertaining film.

real life space invaders

and if that won you over….how about a few minutes of pong?
