Swag for GDC ’09 goers…

thought of the day: is it any coincidence that the difference between “fitness” and “fatness” is one pot-bellied character?

Yes, that’s a wholly underwhelming thumbnail, but the mysteries of its cropping reveal the secrets of… well, not much. A peek at the business card design our outlet will be using from GDC 09 forward; until they run out or I do something better. Info side is matte, red side is a beautiful glossy finish. That’s all for today.

Colder

indeed. so my new site has been launched for a few weeks now and what have i done with it? let me add a few carriage returns to demonstrate..

…that’s about it.

however, i have been busting ass to visit seattle, do my day job as an art director & designer, and then come home and do my ‘other job’ of helping GoNintendo run. i really need to spend more time relaxing and enjoying the life all my busy-work affords. anyway, as the seasons dosie-do here in minnesota, a few lines pencilled a few months back in the swelter of summer seem fitting, especially since they’ve not yet seen prime time on the site.

Under the Cold Stare

keep tuned for a few game-related stories in the near future.

What the PS3 made me do

so i recently bought a ps3, and while my review isn’t live yet for that, an absolutely unbeatable opportunity presented itself to upgrade my 53″ rear projection panasonic hdtv to a slick new panasonic 50″ 1080p plasma (th-50pz750), which takes full advantage of the highest-available picture quality. needless to say, i definitely did my research on the thing before deciding to take the plunge and order my own, and the general consensus is that the 10th generation of plasma technology from panasonic is top-notch; some reviewers even going so far as to say it unseats pioneer elite as the king of plasma television.

while i’m having trouble getting my xbox360 to properly display in 1080p–which according to microsoft’s xbox website it should be able to do with their HD a/v component cables after last fall’s system update–being able to run 720p or a pseudo 1080p (1080i which the tv de-interlaces) is still truly beautiful. and it should go without saying that the ps3 running native 1080p over HDMI is even better, both game footage as well as blu-ray movie playback. this tv’s black levels are something to behold; i’ve never seen a tv of any sort with such deep black levels that it often looks as though parts of the screen are in fact revealing the abyss of deep space. the glossy, ipod-y black bezel of the tv looks great during day or night, and the black levels can often achieve the same deepness. the brights come close to simulating daylight in my rather large room when daylight is missing outside.

bottom line: the panasonic th-50pz750 is incredible, and quite a value compared to any of the next best screens available in the pioneer elite line. a slightly more consumer-focused model (th-50pz700) is available which omits a few higher-end, advanced picture controls and an HDMI port for 500$ less, but share the same screen. as well, 42″ and 58″ models are also available depending on your size and budgetary considerations. a definite must-buy if you’re in the market for a plasma tv.

since it’s been nearly impossible to find decent photos of this tv, i decided to take some of my own, along with a few video clips. below you’ll find a couple photos of my previous panasonic, and then a bunch of my new baby, including a few with me standing next to it for scale and size relationship (i’m 6′ tall). and yes, it’s summertime, so with a little warm weather or sun, i become a full-on silhouette, as you can see from the photos.. the walls are properly lit, and i’m still dark 😛

long break, long read to break your eyes and/or ears

how to hear thingsthought of the day: beethoven suffered deafness, yet penned some of the most incredible melodies those of us lucky enough to hear will ever have the pleasure of experiencing. now in my head (a scary zone you’ll all likely agree) i almost constantly have little songs of my own design floating about, and assuming most people also tend to have music on the brain from time to time; with millions of deaf people since ludwig van, how many brilliant melodies have been lost in those minds that the rest of us will never hear?

happy new year to those who bother putting up with my inconsistent posting. the truth is over the past couple months since my last posting i’ve been doing two things related to this site: migrating to a dedicated, externally-hosted server and concepting some new designs. so my site is no longer kept on one of my computers here at the house, but a faster, more reliable machine somewhere else. and while i still find merit in my yellow/orange design, i’m surprised i’ve let it go this long without a refresh, considering how quickly i tend to bore with most everything else; the existing layout is a good 4-5 years old, a near-eternity in web years.

combine the above with a hectic work and holiday schedule, and it begins to make sense that venting my oft-abnormal thoughts and observations on some web log starts to take exceedingly lower priority; or maybe it’s just me.

broken horses and the american way

visible equinethought of the day: so you can ‘break’ their backs, but can horses break their noses? most of their head is long, hard bone, especially the long plane leading down to the soft, rubbery nose. but what’s under all that jiggly snout, and can it be broken like human noses?

next, i wanted to rant a bit about clothing. you see, i used to love shopping for clothes, and would spend plenty of money in some of the trendier stores for clothing that really spoke my personality visually through textile design. however, most of my favourite spots in the past couple/few years have been drowned by what i consider a slump of really crap fashion.

a&f used to be the top dog, but then all they seemed to carry were pink polo shirts with disfigured collars and jeans clearly rescued from storage lockers where small rodentia likely fed upon the clothes, leaving the “destroyed” remnants to be sold at a premium, as if a&f themselves had put extra labour into intentionally damaging the clothing for design reasons. rubbish. i’ll gladly pay 70 bucks for a pair of jeans, but not 2-3 times that for a pair unsuitable to wear anywhere except the local skating park or under-bridge homeless development.

then there is the amazingly schizophrenic express for men stores which just confuses me on a quarterly basis.
